4 / 2008 to 8 / 2008 Contracted L3 System Administrator for General Electric – Louisville, KY
As Storage Team Leader for both SAN and NAS including: EMC, NetApp & Isilon I was the last line of defense in the multi-hop, multi-zone, World-Wide environment at NBC Universal, before issues had to be escalated from remote to onsite. I custom designed Perl Modules to shape and distribute WAN and/LAN/VPN traffic as need. Load changes were reported from an F5 BIGIP GTM and could be viewed in a near real time environment with Multi Router Traffic Graphics. The modules tied into Linux and Windows Heartbeat controls for either scheduled or unscheduled automated traffic handling. MRTG reports were automatically stored in a Postgres SQL database and analyzed. Reports of trends and or possible errors were then sent to the Network and Server Administration teams. My team was responsible for 4000+ servers world-wide.

This was accomplished with a custom back-end founded heavily on MRTG with custom Perl hooks. As the founding owner of Merlin Internet Services, it was also my goal to train those with physical and other disabilities along the way.

Publications:
LAMB – “LINUX: Administration and Maintenance Book”
I began writing this (approximately) 643 page publication in 2002. The intent of LAMB as an ongoing project was to provide a centralized and simplistic multi-distribution reference for new and seasoned Linux users and administrators. LAMB is actively used as a reference point by employees of AOL Time Warner and OLM.net.

“Site Security – Improving the Security of Your Site by Breaking Into it”
In this whitepaper I take an unusual approach to system security. I look through the eyes of a potential intruder. I illustrate that seemingly harmless network services can be valuable tools in the search for weaknesses of a system, even when these services are operating exactly as they are intended.
